Leishman nearly wins – Aussies show a strong hand at Travelers

Jun 28, 2021

Despite four sub 70 rounds and a closing 64, Marc Leishman fell one shot shy of joining Harris English (pictured) and Kramer Hickok in a playoff at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut.

In more good news for the Aussies eyeing a victory at The Open Championship at Royal St George in mid-July, Jason Day returned to form finishing T10 (-9) after a blistering second round 62. Adam Scott was a shot behind Day in T13 (-8), Lucas Herbert T19 (-7) and Cam Smith T30 (-5) all in the top half of the leaderboard. Matt Jones T36 and Cameron Percy T54 made it seven Aussies making the cut and in action over the weekend – seven starters and seven finishers! After what has been a quiet few weeks it was good to see the Green and Gold back in form.

Harris English and Kramer Hickok went to a sudden death playoff and it was an epic. After seven holes and all par results, they went to an 8th playoff hole and were now involved in the equal second longest playoff in history on the PGA Tour. English finally made a birdie after Hickok missed his attempt from over 20 feet to end the deadlock.

The longest sudden death playoff in history was at the 1949 Motor City Open between Lloyd Mangrum and Cary Middlecoff. After 11 holes the tournament was declared a tie due to darkness. Prior to this event, on five other occasions a sudden death playoff went to 8 holes, including the most recent in 2012 that involved Australia’s Robert Allenby. Unfortunately Appleby was defeated by rookie John Huh.
