The large surface area of the grip allows more of the hands to contact the grip and hold it lightly, thereby avoiding strangling the putter and yipping shorter putts. Similarly the soft hands allow a smooth rhythmical stroke resulting in closer longer putts.
Another advantage is that it prevents the breakdown of wrists which encourages the use of arm and shoulder motion putting.
