Leading light in introducing the Eurobet Seve Ballesteros Trophy to the European Tour International Schedule in 2000. Captained Continental Europe to 131/2 - 121/2 win over Great Britain & Ireland at Sunningdale, beating rival skipper Colin Montgomerie in the singles.

One of four brothers - all golf professionals - he learned the game at the age of seven using a cut down three iron on the beach near his home in Santander.

Exploded into the limelight in the 1976 Open at Royal Birkdale, chasing home Johnny Miller. Winner of 88 titles world-wide including three Opens (1979, 1984 and 1988) and two Masters tournaments (1980 and 1983).

Charismatic presence behind the European revival in the Ryder Cup. Won 20 points from 37 matches against the United States. Played an inspirational role, as captain, in Europe's retention of the Ryder Cup at Valderrama in 1997. First player to reach £1 million, £2 million and £3 million in earnings on the European Tour.

Won the 1998 and 1999 AXA Performance Data categories for Average Putts per Round and Putts per Green in Regulation.
