After three rounds of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines South course in San Diego, Jason Day was tied for the lead with Rookie of the Year Will Zalatoris.
Day started the event that he has won twice (2015 and 2018) with a solid 70, but rounds of 65 and 67 over days two and three shot him to the top of the leader board. In the third round he had two birdies on the front, spluttered with a bogey on 12 and then came home fast and hard with birdies on the 13th and then one on each of the final three holes. He shared the 3rd round lead with Zalatoris.
However it was to be Luke List’s maiden title after 206 starts on Tour. He shot a brilliant final round 66 (-6) and had to wait for the leading pack to finish their rounds almost 2 hours later before he headed to a playoff with Zalatoris who tied him on -15, one shot ahead of World #1 Jon Rahm, Jason Day and American Cameron Triangle all one shot adrift on -14 in T3 place.
While Day missed out on the “W”, it was a nice return to form and improved his standing in the FedExCup standings from 197 to 79th spot.
List won the first playoff hole in near darkness after a pitching wedge stopped within inches from the hole for a tap in four, one better than young superstar in the making Zalatoris. Young Will has plenty of time to win future events and he’ll probably win many, but it was great to see a journeyman win his first tournament at 37 years of age and a couple of hundred tries – who knows it may be his first and only.
Marc Leishman put in a solid performance finishing T16 and the other Australian to play on the weekend was Cam Davis who finished T56. Matt Jones and Brett Drewitt both missed the cut.
The circus moves to Pebble Beach this week for the popular AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
