Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama has won the first of the FedEx Cup finals, the St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind, Memphis, Tennessee. His closing round of 70 (even par) saw him finish on -17, enough to hold off a fast finishing group that included World #2 Xander Schauffele. Xander started the final round nine shots behind the leaders and stormed home with a closing round 63 (-7) to tie for 2nd with Viktor Hovland on -15. World #1 Scottie Scheffler was 4th on -14.
It was Matsuyama’s 10th PGA TOUR title and first in a FedExCup Playoffs, moving him from No. 8 to No. 3 in the FedExCup. He has 11 consecutive finishes inside the top 50 in the FedExCup, the longest active streak on TOUR (best finish in the FedExCup: 8th, 2017).
Reigning FedExCup Champion Viktor Hovland (T2/-15) posts 66 to finish T2, his second top-10 finish of the season and his best result on TOUR since his win at the 2023 TOUR Championship, moving from No. 57 to No. 16 in the FedExCup and will defend his title at next week’s BMW Championship .
FedExCup No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (4th/-14) collects his 11th top-five finish in 17 starts this season and retains his lead in the FedExCup over Xander Schauffele by 1,496 points.
Aussie Adam Scott just keeps on keeping on, finishing T17 and climbed to #41 in the FedExCup standings, earning a place at the second event, The BMW, that includes just the Top 50 players. Min Woo Lee finished T22, Jason Day T22 and Cam Davis T40. Davis just hung in to play at the BMW this week (49th) with Scott and Day, however Min Woo Lee dropped to 60th overall to drop out of the race.
