Xander wins The Open and a second major for 2024

Jul 22, 2024

Xander Schauffele is the first player to win multiple majors in the same year since Brooks Koepka won the 2018 US Open and US PGA Championship, with his victory at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon. It was Xander’s ninth PGA Tour title and he has certainly proved to be the player of the year in majors in 2024, with Top 10 placings in all four majors; T8 Masters, T7 US Open and the two wins at the PGA and Open. He’s had 12 top-10 finishes in 18 starts on tour, only behind World #1 Scott Scheffler who has 14. The win moves the popular American from #3 to World #2.

Justin Rose (T2, -7) posted his fourth career runner-up finish in a major championship and first since the 2018 Open Championship. 54 hole leader Billy Horschel (T2, -7) earned his career-best finish in his 43rd start at a major championship (previous T4 at 2013 U.S. Open)

Thriston Lawrence (4th/-6) earns enough non-member FedExCup points to become eligible for Special Temporary Membership on the PGA TOUR. If he accepts, Lawrence would be eligible for unlimited sponsor exemptions for the remainder of the 2024 season as he attempts to earn his PGA TOUR card for 2025 via non-member FedExCup points (as many or more points as No. 125 in the 2024 FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List through the FedExCup Fall).

For the Aussies, it was the evergreen Adam Scott that flew the flag, finishing T10 at even par after a closing round 71. A second round +7 (77) in brutal conditions at The Troon was his undoing, however his third round 66 (-5) put him just four strokes behind the leaders going into the final day. After making the turn at -1, Scott doubled bogeyed the 10th and despite a birdie at 12, he lost track of the leaders who were all shooting rounds in the 60s. Xander’s closing 65 was the day’s best.

Speaking of Day, our Jason shot a closing 68 (-3) to climb 22 places to finish T13. Unfortunately Min Woo Lee (+9), Elvis Smylie (+9), amateur Jasper Stubbs (+10) and 2022 Open Champion Cameron Smith (+12) all missed the cut.

All four majors for the year were won by Americans for the first time since 1982; Craig Stadler (Masters Tournament), Tom Watson (U.S. Open and The Open Championship) and Raymond Floyd (PGA Championship). The last non-American to win a major championship was Jon Rahm (2023 Masters Tournament) who finished T7 (-1).

Xander now has 2 major wins this year, and he finished in the top 10 in all 4 majors for 2024. Schauffele has gamed his driver and golf ball since the season-opening event in Hawaii, earning 12 top-10 finishes already in 2024. He's added over 4 mph of ball speed off the tee with this combination, and is now averaging over 183 mph for the year. Paradym Ai Smoke Drivers have earned 3 major wins this year.

Xander’s Chrome Tour Golf Ball provides him with total performance from tee-to-green, with fast ball speeds and outstanding greenside control. To put that into greater context, he's currently 2nd on the PGA TOUR this year in Strokes Gained: Total and 3rd in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green.

Schauffele's bag also includes a Callaway Opus Wedge. Our new Opus Wedges have already earned 3 major wins, with Xander's victories and Yuka Saso at the U.S. Women's Open. Opus officially launched last week; led by innovative Spin Gen Face Technology™️, they provide extraordinary performance with unparalleled craftsmanship, and Callaway's most Tour-validated shapes.
