The score board didn’t tell the full story although it was a familiar ending – The US Team prevailed over a depleted International Team due to player’s ineligibility after joining the LIV Tour. Sure the US Team had players unavailable too, however the International Team has far fewer players ranked in the Top 100 and so any absences were less easily covered. The final scoreline 17.5 to 12.5 didn’t tell the full story though.
The plucky Internationals were far from disgraced at Quail Hollow. Si Woo Kim beat Justin Thomas and Sebastian Munoz beat World #1 Scottie Scheffler in the singles saying it was probably the best thing that he had ever achieved in his life. Aussie Cam Davis gave a great account of himself on the Saturday with countryman Adam Scott – finishing eagle, birdie, birdie to win their match. Imagine if Aussies Cam Smith and Marc Leishman were there to guide them. They weren’t of course.
As usual there were amazing shots, lots of hooting and hollering from the American crowd and Jordan Spieth looks back in top form with a 5-0-0 record for the week earning MVP plaudits.
Let’s hope the Tours can get their collective stuff together and both teams are represented by the best players available regardless of their allegiances in 2024, where the next Cup will be played at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada.
