Australia’s Min Woo Lee has won his first US PGA title just two weeks out from the Masters at Augusta, with four sub 60 rounds (260, -20).
Holding off a strong finishing Gary Woodland and Scottie Scheffler (-19), Lee was able to recover from a nervous bogey on 16 in the final round to hold steady and enjoy a one shot lead after the final hole of the Texas Children’s Houston Open.
Entering the day with a four shot lead after rounds of 66, 64 and 63, Lee became the hunted but at the half way point of the final round still held a three shot lead despite a wayward driver. His bogey at 16 was followed by back-to-back pars, highlighted by a brilliant putt from off the green to within inches of the final cup for an easy tap-in par and first title.
It was Lee’s first PGA TOUR victory in 56th career TOUR start at the age 26 years, 8 months. On way to his victory he recorded the low 72-hole score at the Texas Children’s Houston Open (previous: 264/Tony Finau/2022. It was a win on Debut at the Houston Open for Lee, becoming first player since Paul Casey (2009) to win in his first start at the event
Lee becomes the 38th Australian to win on TOUR and second this season (Karl Vilips/Puerto Rico Open). Min Woo also earns 500 FedExCup points and moves from No. 60 to No. 16 in the FedExCup standings, his career-high rank and he’s projected to move from No. 55 to No. 22 in the Official World Golf Ranking, his career-high rank and first time inside the top 25. Great form leading into Augusta in a fortnight.
