Feb 23, 2026

Sporting legend ricky ponting first to tee off at Country Club Tasmania’s new championship golf course

Country Club Tasmania reached an exciting milestone in the development of its new Championship Golf Course, with Ambassador Ricky Ponting testing out the first nine completed holes with a VIP group of avid golfers and sporting stars. The course, the centrepiece of the resort’s $20 million golf precinct development, is on track to officially open in Summer 2027.

With spectacular parkland scenery, strategically crafted fairways and signature water features, the initial nine holes delivered a compelling preview of what is set to become one of Australia’s most exciting new golf destinations. Ponting, a passionate golfer and proud Launceston local, said the preview event showcased just how special the course will be once complete.

“Playing the first nine holes for the very first time, was just extraordinary. I can now visualise exactly what this magnificent facility is going to be.”

“I feel very lucky to have been able to get a sneak peek ahead of the opening next summer. The course is going to be something truly unique for Tasmania. It’s beautifully shaped, challenging in all the right ways and built to a championship standard.” continued Ponting.

Designed by acclaimed architect Robin Gibson, the Championship Golf Course draws on inspiration from iconic layouts across North America and the UK while celebrating the natural Tassie landscape. Mature trees, stone bridges, lakes and creeks from the course, creating a stunning and technically demanding parkland-styled design.

Head of Golf at Country Club Tasmania Bryce Gorham said the course is already delivering the playing experience the team envisioned.

“Watching Ricky and his guests test out the first half of the course showed just how engaging these holes and the course really is. Robin and the team have created a design that rewards strategy and precision. Every shot matters, and every hole offers something memorable” Gorham said.

There’s something for everyone at Country Club Tasmania, With Country Club Tasmania recently opening The Range in July 2026, guests can enjoy 8-bays on two levels, top tracer technology, an 18-hole mini golf course and clubhouse bar and restaurant, all housed within the precinct.

Editor's Note:
As a guest of the resort, ausgolf recently had a look at the new facility and quite frankly we were blown away. The Range was state-of-the-art and the new nine holes of the Championship Course was in awesome condition! Fairways were like carpet, while putting surfaces were firm, fast and pure.
The layout has an American, Parkland Resort feel, although it's quite open to the elements. Think riverstone lined creeks crossing fairways, with water a feature throughout. Think handmade stone bridges and shining white bunkers. Think wide, open fairways with a second cut and fescue rough, perfectly framing and defining each hole.
There’s several teeing options to suit the pro player right through to the beginner golfer and cart paths lead you to and from each hole and then right back to the impressive Clubhouse come round’s end.
Launceston and the Championship Course at Country Club Tasmania will be a golf destination in its own right come 2027, while the perfect base to explore other great golf in this beautiful state. Bring it on!
